The University of Iowa, Event Management

Heather Spangler came up with the idea for the University of Iowa’s Event Management Certificate while she was sleeping in 2015. Ten years later, leading the thriving program is still a dream come true. Spangler directs the certificate, which quickly became one of the largest of its kind on campus, drawing approximately 300 driven, creative, dynamic students.

Spangler, an associate professor of instruction, was recently named a national “Trendsetter” in the events industry by Meetings Today for her work incorporating professional development opportunities in and out of the classroom while preparing the industry’s next generation.

In addition to her work at the UI, Spangler’s favorite thing to do is be with her two daughters. She also loves to travel, read, eat and find ways to support her community.

With her students, she operates a chapter of Box of Balloons, a nonprofit organization which delivers everything a family needs to celebrate their child’s birthday when they otherwise wouldn’t have the means to do so. In addition, Spangler is a five-time head coach for Girls on the Run, hosts annual fundraising events for the nonprofit news organization Investigate Midwest, and is an active school volunteer and PTA member.
